Youth Section 2017 – Round Up by Tony Hutchings, Section Secretary
Wellington Cricket Club’s youth section finished their league programme with a washout as the U13 team had to call off their last fixture on Sunday when they were due to play at home to Taunton Deane.
Heavy overnight rain left no other decision sensible but this made no difference to the league table as they finished an excellent 2nd behind ‘The Deane’ with only 1 defeat in their 10 league fixtures.
The U15 team can also feel well pleased with their league performance as they finished tied with 3 other teams in joint 2nd behind Huish and Langport.
Bearing in mind they cancelled their 1st fixture as they couldn’t raise a team and but for a close decision would have beaten the league winners they could well have ended up as league victors themselves.
The young U11 team who in some games used 3 or 4 children from as young as 7 and 8 can be extremely proud of their effort and in beating teams such as Taunton St Andrews show that the youth section as a whole, and hopefully the club in general, has a bright future.
The ECB led All Stars programme also proved successful for Wellington as a further 40 kids aged 5-8 regularly trained at the club meaning in excess of 90 children a week either were coached or played at the club.
The section can look forward to presentation evening on Friday 1 September, when a BBQ will be followed by the section’s awards and then indoor training will commence in early January, to prepare the players for next season.
