Broadway and Horton 2nd XI 154-7 Wellington 3rd XI 143

Wellington 3rd XI were disappointed not to have chased the 155 that they required at Broadway and Horton in Division Seven South of the Somerset League last weekend when they pulled up just eleven runs short and so collected fourteen points and are fourth going into the final game of the first half of the season.

On a drizzly day Wellington asked Broadway to bat first and Tyler Fyfe struck a good blow for his side as he trapped Andrews plum in front.

The home side reacted to this by Garland and Watkins – who made 31 each – adding 57 for the second wicket, but it was the Tony Hutchings/Richard Henwood double act that removed them both as Hutchings took 2-30 in eight good overs of seam bowling.

From then Wellington controlled matters as Ben White – on senior debut – did wonderfully well to go for just 14 runs in his eight overs that were bowled in two spells.

Ollie Wilkins got in amongst the wickets as he took 2-19 in six overs and Richard Henwood’s 2-38 in eight overs had made Broadway be 122-7 with five overs to go, but a partnership of 32 for the home side’s eighth wicket between Field (22no) and Smith (19no) was going to be valuable in the end.

Wellington got off to a bad start as they found themselves at 2-2, but Simon Burrough with 34 and Dave Luxton with 27 added 64 for their side’s third wicket as they both took the attack to the home side well, but both were out by the time the score had reached 73.

Max White with 11 played a decent hand, but wickets were been lost regularly by Wellington although the run rate was not an issue; The 33 eighth wicket stand by Richard Henwood and Tyler Fyfe was taking Wellington to the brink of a win as Henwood crafted an excellent 39, but when he was out edging one high and been caught the game was pretty much up for Wellington and it came with 3.3 overs unused as Driscoll, Hill and Wilson with three wickets apiece to seal 32 points for their side.
