Wellington 104-6 Taunton St Andrews B 67
Wellington will be playing in the semi finals of the Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield on their own patch next Monday (19th June) when they will play fellow WEPL Somerset Division side Staplegrove following this 37 run win over Taunton St Andrews B.
Wellington opted to bat first and saw Kayden Hine and Arron Campbell get away well with a 41 run opening stand that took all their concentration to compile as TSA were in good form with the ball – both spin and seam.
Hine with 20 and Campbell with 25 had done well at the top of the order for the Red and Blacks.
Skipper Luke Desave with 31no was the principal run scorer as the innings continued with the Woodland brothers – Sam and Jack – bowling well for TSA as their off spinners were a portent to come of Wellington’s time with the ball.
He and Jack Beal added 16 seventh wicket runs as Wellington got to a three figure score with Beal making a handy 10no.
TSA captain Steve Jenkins with 13 and Tom Poole with 12 were the only double figure scores for the visitors as Wellington’s attack gave nothing away as seam in the form of Jack Beal and spin in the form of Arron Campbell opened up and with a strategy of rotating the bowling at regular intervals and switching seam for spin and vice-versa was as innovative as it was successful.
Campbell with 4-9 in four overs and Dom Drew with 3-14 in 4.4 overs of sharply spinning off spin did the most damage for Wellington, but credit to the seamers too as Beal, Neil Hendy and Ian Hewson did a fine job too as did the fielders and this was exemplified by Luke Vernon’s two catches and a run out to go with other good efforts such as Ian Hewson’s boundary effort that won the game for Wellington.
The chance to compete in the final of the trophy they won back to back in 2008 and 2009 is tantalisingly close and they will be there if they can overcome the Club that will host the final for 2017 in July.
