Wellington U13s 128 – 1 Taunton Vale U13s 66 – 9
Wellington U13s hit the ground running when they recorded a 62 run victory at Taunton on Sunday morning in their opening fixture in the Taunton and District Youth League. Asked to make use of a hard wicket first Ben White and Alex Derbidge played sensibly, took the singles on offer and despatched the bad ball to the boundary.
White was first to pass the retirement score of 30 scoring four fours with Derbidge following his opening partner to retirement which brought 2 new batsmen to the crease.
Keeper Charlie Hawkings holed out without troubling the scorers which left captain Ben Wardell to tie the second 10 overs together, which he did perfectly carrying his bat for 33.
He was ably supported by James Weymouth and Monty Bayliss who were 16 and 10 not out respectively in a total of 128 for 1.
When White removed a Taunton opener early on an early finish was on the cards, but to their credit a young Taunton team used the vast majority of their overs with no. 3 batsman Thomas retiring at 31. Wellington rotated through all their bowlers and 3 wickets for Alec Williams, 2 for Weymouth and Wardell and 1 for Josh Cashmore saw the visitors finish 62 runs shy at the close and will look forward to the return fixture in a fortnight.
