Wellington U13s 65 – 6 Wembdon U13s 66 – 4

Last years semi-finalists came unstuck at the 1st hurdle in this year’s County Cup when they travelled to Bridgwater to take on Wembdon on Sunday morning.

Under grey skies the home skipper had no hesitation in putting Wellington into bat and with the visitors short of players due to district matches and unavailability it was always going to be difficult to reach last season’s heights.

Ben White, and Alex Derbidge opened up, but the uneven bounce undid Alex which brought substitute keeper Charlie Hawkings to the crease and saw the score past 20 before Charlie holed out.

Skipper Ben Wardell was next in and him and White played well before the opener was bowled for 14.

With a very inexperienced squad Wardell anchored the innings and carried his bat for 31 and saw a total of 65 posted to defend.

White also got in the action early with the ball, removing one of the hosts openers Paling in his 2nd over, but Wembdon batted sensibly then upped the tempo when the weather was closing in to pass the total with 5 overs to spare.

Oliver Hansard and Thomas Hopkins, both took a wicket stepping up from the U11 squad and there were lots of positives to take to Taunton next Sunday when the league programme begins at Taunton Vale (Sunday 10am).
