Wellington 201-8 Weston Super Mare 127
A team featuring the Red and Blacks third string and some getting a first game of the season recorded the Club’s opening win of 2017 when they saw off a side drawn from Weston Super Mare’s third and fourth teams, who play at a level in the Somerset League that is on a par with Wellington’s third team, but in the Northern Sections, last Sunday by 74 runs as a shaky start was overcome and, all in all, an effective and cohesive show was served up on the road.
With the new ball in hand Chambers with 3-19 in six overs overall gave Wellington much to think on after Des Campbell has chosen to bat on winning the toss as only Kevin Crout with 11 got going early on.
At 36-4 Wellington were in some bother, but skipper Campbell and Thom Trott applied themselves to add 86 for the fifth wicket and see that the score had recovered well.
Trott was out for 20 as Campbell dominated matters making 81 all told and leading his side from danger.
Richard Henwood and Rob Moysey made 25 and 24 respectively and Macaulay Campbell saw that Wellington got to just over 200 at tea.
Richard Henwood took a wicket early on, but Mayo and Crocker applied themselves to see that Wellington did not add to that initial success until much later, but once Nick Crossing had got Mayo well caught by Ryan Henwood for 21 Weston’s wickets fell often.
Ollie Beale spun one through the gate of Crocker and the experience of Rob Moysey and Thom Trott, with two wickets each, saw that Weston were not going to get too close to Wellington’s total.
Ryan Henwood took two wickets as well and it was left to David Derrick to wrap matters up by taking the last wicket to fall and mention goes to Macaulay Campbell who got through a full eight overs on the day, but with no luck for he beat the bat often with his medium pace.
Kevin Crout kept well with two stumpings on the day as all enjoyed a good day’s cricket between two evenly matched sides.
Wellington has three more chances as a Club to gain valuable pre-season practice as they entertain Minehead and travel to Kilve next Saturday and follow those games with a trip to Sidmouth next Sunday before it all starts for real as the third team begin their Somerset League Division Seven South campaign against Crewkerne 2nd XI at Wellington Playing Field on May Day Bank Holiday Monday (1st May) in what is a re-scheduled game that begins at 1.30pm; the Saturday games begin at 1.00pm and the Sunday game at 2.00pm…
