Wellington 113-5 Ashbrittle 50

Wellington made it three from three in their Somerset Cricket Board Indoor League Division A season with a 63 run win over local rivals Ashbrittle last Sunday evening.

At one stage Wellington were in trouble at 80-5, but a superb innings of 58 not out from Arron Campbell and an excellent bowling and fielding performance saw Wellington home.

For the third game in a row Wellington lost the toss and were asked to bat first.

Wellington got off to a good start with Arron Campbell (25 retired) leading from the front.

Alex Sparks and Mark Bray ensured the Wellington innings kept going at a good pace before Sparks was dismissed for 20.

Ashbrittle then staged a fight back with some disciplined bowling to see Wellington slipped from 63-1 to 80-5 with three overs of the innings remaining.

This left Campbell to try and get Wellington up to a competitive score.

Campbell kept his composure and displayed some clever indoor batting to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Wellington went past the 100 mark in the last over with Campbell taking 17 from the over and bringing up his 50 in the process.

Wellington closed their innings on 113-5.

Wellington got off to a great start with the ball with Ian Hewson (2-14) producing two quality out swinging deliveries to bowl Alfie Venner-Woodcock and Carl Westcott in his first over.

After this Wellington didn’t let Ashbrittle back into the game with Neil Hendy (1-12) and a run out accounting for the next two Ashbrittle wickets to fall.

Ben Franks fought a lone hand for Ashbrittle, but when he chopped on to his stumps of the bowling of Jack Beal (2-9) for 24 the game was almost up.

It was left to a moment of brilliance from Ian Hewson to wrap the game up.

With the ball flying towards the back wall Hewson showed salmon like qualities to leap and pluck the ball with one hand at full stretch.

Ashbrittle were dismissed for 50 and this was a good win for Wellington after being in a difficult situation during their innings.

Wellington are joint top with Bridgwater with two games to play and their lead over the Red and Blacks is just 0.004 of a run (based on net run rate) following their last ball win over Ashbrittle in the game after Wellington’s as Bridgwater chased down 120 to win.

Wellington’s next game is on Sunday 20th November and is another local derby as they play Sampford Arundel at 4.55pm; Sampford were involved in another game that was decided on the last ball last Sunday evening as Taunton St Andrews chased down 118 to win and got there off the last play of the game.

Bridgwater play North Petherton on Sunday 20th November at 3.50pm, so Wellington will have a good idea of the equation involved before they next play – it could be that a repeat of the end of the 2014-2015 indoor season comes to pass in that Bridgwater and Wellington play each other in their last games of the season to see who is crowned League Champions and will thus represent Somerset in the regional stage of the National Indoor Club Championship.
