Wellington 183 North Perrott 185-5
Wellington are still fighting to the last day of the season in the battle to stay in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League despite this five wicket loss at mid-table North Perrott last weekend.
With a home match with Wembdon to come the Red and Blacks are in eighth place and have a four point cushion over Butleigh and are five points ahead of rock bottom Frome after they both lost over the Bank Holiday weekend to title challengers North Petherton and Glastonbury respectively.
As the fixtures work out Butleigh entertain Glastonbury and North Petherton travel to Frome on the last day and with just a point between the top two they have every incentive to put in a good show.
Wellington, naturally, need to beat Wembdon on their own track, but, on paper at least, this is a decent backdrop for the side.
As for this game it was a case of not making the best of a good start with the bat following a 53 run opening stand between Robin Davies and Arron Campbell as they both played well and were untroubled by the Perrott attack; a cruel run out broke the stand as Davies hammered a full toss back to the bowler only for him to drop it and have enough pace to parry the ball on to the stumps and run out Campbell for 18.
Alex Sparks with 21 joined Davies and they got the score moving towards three figures before the skipper was caught and this saw a middle order collapse that lost top scorer Davies for 41 and saw the side slip to 140-8.
An enterprising stand of 40 for the ninth wicket from Rob Moysey and Dom Drew rescued the Wellington reply and at least would give the bowlers something to have a dart with; Moysey with 31 and Drew with 15 played well.
Spin was king for Perrott on the day as Bartholomeuz, Eckland and Whorlow each took at least two wickets.
Ian Hewson was in dynamic form with the ball once more as he took two wickets in his opening over as Retter was trapped palpably LBW and Jones was caught by Dom Drew; later in his spell Hewson took the wicket of Symes and at 28-3 Perrott were in grave danger.
But a fine 150 run fourth wicket stand between Whorlow (91) and Eckland (59) saw that the home side would take twenty points as they both played well and without issue too.
They were dismissed with a handful of runs needed as Arron Campbell took a wicket for his efforts and a run out too was effected by Wellington, but the winning runs came with sixteen balls left.
