Glastonbury 128 Wellington 40-2

Wellington were denied by the weather again at home this season when in an excellent position against WEPL Somerset Division title pretenders Glastonbury last weekend as, having bowled the visitors out for just 128, they made an excellent start getting to 30-0 in seven overs before the last break for rain was terminal and saw the game called off just after 7.00pm due to an unfit surface.

Rain breaks had dogged the game all the way and it became 42 over per side match quite early on, but Wellington were into their stride early as Ian Hewson was in metronomic form with ten overs costing just 9 runs (six maidens in that total of overs) and he removed Glastonbury openers Lukins and W.Mason in his excellent spell.

Luke Desave backed Hewson up with a pacy spell that totalled nine overs (due to the loss of overs this was the overs limit at the time) as he took 2-31.

Jack Beal did well with the ball in the middle order as Glastonbury struggled to get going in damp and cloudy conditions as Ellison with 25 and Stratton with 22 were the only ones to truly get going with the bat.

Spin saw the demise of the Thorns innings as Arron Campbell was once more in the wickets as he took 3-29 in nine fine overs of off spin and three wickets from Rob Moysey and Dom Drew combined saw that it was 129 to win.

But a two hour loss of play from just before 5.00pm with Wellington well placed at 30-0 in seven overs through Robin Davies and Arron Campbell was never truly allowed to develop thereafter; play had to begin by 6.48pm and it did – just – and two wickets were lost to Hotham as the openers were separated.

When the game was finally called off with Wellington taking eleven points to Glastonbury’s eight Arron Campbell had made 19no.

Wellington climbed out of the drop zone as a result of Saturday’s results and with two games to go so much can still happen.
