Wellington U13 117–4 Taunton U13 109–5

Wellington U13 wrapped up their season with a fine all round performance and an 8 run victory at Taunton,on Sunday morning in the Taunton and District Youth League.

Having been inserted Wellington’s new opening pair of Ben White and Ollie Hunt made a solid start before White was out caught which brought captain Ben Wardell to the crease.

These two then formed a partnership which took the visitors to just shy of 50, in the 8th over, before Hunt was bowled for 16.

James Drohan was next in and he formed another meaningful partnership with his captain as they passed 80 in the 15th over before his stumps were rattled.

Wardell passed his retirement score of 30 and late runs from Monty Bayliss, Jacob Hurry and Tom Shannon saw a good total of 117 posted.

Shannon was soon back in the action, this time with the new ball, sending back a Taunton opener and with Sam Foster, stepping up from the U11s, also taking 2 wickets, aided by 2 fine catches from Charlie Hawkings, Wellington were in the box seat.

The middle overs were bowled well by Wardell and White, who, as the previous week, only conceded 23 runs in their 8 overs only for the initiative to be wrestled away by a bright 31 no from the home side’s Lottie.

Nerves jangled a little as needing 40 off the last 4 Taunton swung the bat to good effect and got to within 15 with 1 over remaining which Ollie Hunt sent down perfectly leaving the visitors the victors by 8 runs, and a final placing of joint 3rd.

The boys can be well satisfied, playing 11 a side cricket for the 1st time in many years, in a league which consisted of Taunton, Taunton Deane, Taunton St Andrews and Bridgwater, the future looks extremely bright as only 1 of today’s team will be moving up to U15s next year.

Thanks to all the parents for support and transportation and look forward to working with the boys for the rest of the summer and into 2017.
