Under 11s – Wickets prevent victory in vain run chase

Wellington Under 11’s put up a spirited performance in trying to chase down a total against Taunton Deane ‘A’ on Friday evening at a sun basked playing fields.

The visitors made a stuttering start with Olly Hunt taking a wicket in the first over and with the rest of the home attack bowling tightly,

The Deane had only added 4 runs to their opening score by the end of the 5th over.

The tie then swung towards the Taunton side, as between the 6th and 13th over, 38 runs were added meaning a large total looked likely until 2 wickets late on left a challenging, but not impossible 252 for victory.

On their turn to bat, Wellington struggled early on losing 4 wickets in the first 5 overs, meaning any scoring shots were wiped out by the 6 run penalty for losing a wicket.

It took to the 4th pair of Sam Foster and Monty Booth before the run rate picked up as they added 18 runs in their 4 over stint leaving Olly Hunt and Jacob Hurry 32 runs to find.

They set about the task with gusto with several boundaries drawing the large crowd away from the tempting burgers and hot dogs at the BBQ to watch them finish agonisingly 10 runs short.

In the end the difference was Taunton Deane losing 2 fewer wickets and those extra 12 penalty runs given away by Wellington were the difference against what is likely to be one of the strongest teams in the division.

Wellington Cricket Club would like to thank all those parents and friends who came down to join in the family fun night giving a great atmosphere.

The youngsters have a blank weekend this coming weekend so return to action on Friday 27th May with the visit of Minehead.
