Wellington U13 278 Bishops Hull U13 272

Wellington Under 13s finished their league campaign with a nail-biting victory on Sunday morning at a damp playing fields in the Taunton and District Youth League West Division.

Coming into the match in good form – only 1 defeat since mid May – and a place in the top 4 up for grabs Ollie Beale on winning the toss decided to bat first.

Harvey Pierce and James Drohan batted cautiously, then Fabian Reah and Ben White went chasing the attack, adding 36 runs in 4 overs leaving the hosts well placed on 240 at the halfway stage.

Captain Beale kept the scoreboard ticking over with ‘keeper Jacob Hurry, making his 1st appearance stepping up from Under 11s, who then passed the baton to fellow under 11 players Tom Shannon and Cam Forrest, who took the score to a competitive 278.

The visitors set about the chase with gusto; in particular Callum Hendy, son of Wellington 1st teamer Neil, who smashed 5 boundaries to take them over half way to the target inside 5 overs.

The next 10 overs belonged to Wellington as the runs dried up and wickets tumbled leaving an unlikely 45 needed in the last 5.

The home bowlers seemed to be holding their nerve, but the Taunton side’s F.Wolfenden had different ideas and with 21 needed off of Reah’s final over took 3 x 4s off the first 3 deliveries, then a wide which meant 8 from 3 was the equation.

Three tight deliveries finished the innings, leaving Wellington the victors by a meagre 6 runs and almost certainly 4th place in a tight division.

Next Sunday sees a morning combined U11 / U13 youth fixture at Club Day, with details due to be finalised on Tuesday 14th July.
