Wellington 2nd XI 121 Fitzhead 88

Wellington 2nd XI edged home by 33 runs to an opening Somerset League Division Four win last weekend when their first ever points encounter against a first team went their way.

Having been put into bat it was skipper Richard Henwood who top scored for a second week running as he made 27 at the top of the order.

Mark Salter with 20 played a steady hand as did Darren Davis with 15, but the four wickets each for Phillips and S.Bellringer saw that Wellington were despatched for 121 in 41 overs with Neil Hendy’s 19no about to take on a big part in the game.

Adrian Lee was superb with 4-6 in 8 overs as he and Scott Davey (2-38) reduced last season’s Division Five champions to 21-6 and in all sorts of bother although their skipper R.Bellringer with 32 was playing well.

Tom Baycock and Darren Davis dislodged and thus ended a 38 run seventh wicket stand that had brought Fitzhead back into the game – 29 more runs came, but so did the end of Fitzhead’s innings with 17.1 overs left and that they lost by just 33 runs shows that they were close to victory and so this must go down as a fine win for Wellington 2nd XI.

The team face the long trek to Frome this weekend.
