Club Day 2011
Wellington Cricket Club held possibly their best ever Club Day on Sunday 24th July when all involved with the Club came together at Courtland Road for lunch, some fun cricket and an evening of discussion.
After a morning of preparation Club Chairman Duncan Short welcomed those gathered to the event; he started by thanking the Club’s Fixture Secretary Steve Symons for selecting a date for the event that was dry and fine, he then welcomed the guests who had been invited to the event for their time and efforts given – Wellington Town Council were represented by Mayor and Mayoress Andrew and Jackie Govier, Deputy Mayor Vivienne Stock-Williams, her husband Ian and Cllr Janet Reed and they were thanked for sponsoring the Club’s Winter Youth Development Project that had run for each of the past two close seasons; this had been a complete success all told and could be measured by the fact that the Under 11s squad – managed by Mark Salter and coached by Les Reed – had won their division this season.
The final guest was Andrew Moulding and his family; Andrew has recently retired as Cricket Development Manager for Somerset and has aided the Club to achieve Club Mark accreditation in the past few weeks and he was thanked wholeheartedly for his advice and wise counsel in this respect.
A magnificent lunch of ham, turkey, pasta and potato dishes was followed by an array of puddings and sweets of the highest order; again Chris and Simon Rudd served up a feast of supreme quality and this was taken by around 120 persons. Thanks go to Jane Trott, Judith Short, Tony Rudd, Connie Radford and Jenny Baycock for their help with the meal too.
This was the first such event where the Club’s Pavilion Bar had been open and this was manned mainly by Trevor Brooks, Trudy Brooks and Amanda Moysey with David Derrick and Rob Moysey lending support when needed.
Grateful thanks go to all who prepared food, served drink and kept the excellent number of attendees looked after.
A fun 20/20 match was played with a good varied amount of players taking part; thanks go to Mark Salter and Kevin Crout for umpiring this game.
After a big clear up (thanks to Graham Sparks for use of his works van for the transportation of tables and chairs back to WRFC and to Nigel Davy and Caroline Davy of WRFC for their supply in the first place) a barbecue was run by Simon Rudd and Kevin Crout and this was the classic end to a great Wellington CC Club Day for 2011.
Many made the day the success it was and if anyone has been missed out then apologies, but this was a team event and all can be so proud of their efforts.
