Temple Cloud 82 Wellington 83-3
On a weekend when they showed five changes from the previous week Wellington rose to the challenge and came out on top by winning by seven wickets in Division One of the Somerset League to close the gap on North Petherton to just ten points.
With a much changed line up due to a variety of other commitments Thom Trott took charge of the side for the first time and won an important toss against last season’s Division Two champions; Trott had no hesitation in asking the Bristol based side to bat first and he was rewarded by a great opening spell from Trott himself and George Hooper who strangled the Temple Cloud run rate so much that when they had completed their combined fourteen over spell the score was just 21-2, both Trott and Hooper got a wicket each, returning figures of 1-4 and 1-16 respectively.
Trott gave way to Richard Henwood who bowled like a man possessed in taking 5-23 in 11.5 overs as he bowled with line, length and accuracy and he had too much for a side who won every game they played last season following relegation in 2009.
Great catching aided the Wellington effort as some good chances were taken by James Bath, Thom Trott, Max Capaldi and keeper Aks Latifi.
Neil Hendy swung the ball lots and provided much to think of as Temple batted poorly as a collective unit; only James with 21 looked at ease on the slow, low surface.
Max Capaldi gave Wellington their spin option on the day and with 2-8 had a hand in bundling Temple Cloud out for 82 in 36.5 overs.
Marc Holloway and Neil Hendy were a new opening partnership for Wellington and they had to negotiate forty minutes of batting before tea and they successfully did so taking the score to 26-0 in 13 overs.
Off spinner Hayne got the breakthrough when he trapped Hendy LBW, but Robbie Rexworthy reacted to the situation by attacking and he cracked 35 in quick time and this just settled Wellington; he was caught on the boundary and Holloway was LBW next ball for 25, but Max Capaldi and Aks Latifi took Wellington to victory with 17.1 overs to spare and to within ten points of leaders North Petherton who were in trouble at Stogumber when the rain came down and washed their game away.
Wellington travel to Watchet this weekend.
