Wellington 2nd XI 300-7 Wells 2nd XI 186
Wellington 2nd XI joined their 1st XI colleagues at the top of their table thanks to their own third successive win at the start of the 2010 season as they side romped home by 114 runs at Wells last weekend and enjoy a five point margin over Frome in Division Two of the Somerset Cricket League’s Reserves competition.
In this game against another newly promoted side the team equalled it’s highest ever league score and posted only the third double hundred stand in the team’s league history which goes back to 1975.
Wells asked Wellington to bat first and Trevor Brooks and Julian Jones were out of the blocks quickly and saw to it that – in 26 overs – Wellington took the City side for a 203 run opening stand.
Jones – playing for the Red and Blacks for the first time since August 2008 – made 79 with three sixes, one of which was deemed lost ball and Brooks made a maiden Wellington ton as he crafted 110 as he timed and played the ball very well on both sides of the wicket, the overall team record opening stand of 247 was in genuine danger, but as can be the case after a long partnership it is hard to keep it going and Wellington lost three wickets on 203, no problem though as Simon Rudd and Kevin Symons added a cool 34 for the fifth wicket to see Wellington past 250 and George Coate with 16no got the Red and Blacks second string to 300-7 in the last over.
Wells had stuck to their task throughout and Speed’s 2-38 in 9 overs represents great work at a time when the ball was going everywhere.
That Wellington would win was not really the question when fielding commenced after tea, but how long would it take to dislodge the Wells line up – they batted slowly and used up every ball of their 45 overs.
George Coate and Kevin Symons gave nothing away and Symons got a double wicket blast in his fourth over to start the ball rolling for Wellington.
Coate also recorded double wicket success in taking 2-42 in 10 overs to go with Symons who took 2-31 in the same number of overs.
Richard Short continued to bowl tightly and with three catches too he was in good form in the field – he took 1-25 in 10 more good overs.
Wells were indebted to Lennard with 64 to keep their innings alive and his fifth wicket stand of 75 with Ashiff added substance to the home side’s effort with the bat.
Simon Rudd and Graham Sparks wrapped things up with 2-30 and 1-26 and Wellington had 35 points, but Wells made them graft all the way for them.
Next week sees another away match – this time at Temple Cloud.
