Butleigh 97 Wellington 99-3

Wellington bounced back from their opening day defeat to record a fourth successive WEPL Somerset Division win at Butleigh when Alex Sparks and his team did a professional job all round.

A good toss was won by the Wellington skipper who asked Butleigh to bat and he was rewarded with a fine show with the ball and in the field from his charges.

A dead eye run out did for Butleigh opener Drew before Luke Desave produced an absolute pearling delivery to see the back of the other opener Parnell and at 22-2 Wellington were in charge.

Apart from Edmondson and Berkeley, who made 19 each, the home side were all at sea against Wellington’s mix of spin and seam as Jack Beal bowled a measured spell of left arm seam to take 2-19 in seven overs with his accuracy shining through.

From then it was spin all the way as Paul Short, Arron Campbell and Dom Drew saw that Butleigh were all out for 97 in 43.1 overs – Short took 1-32 in 10 good overs with Luke Desave’s fine low boundary catch giving him reward.

Campbell with 2-9 in 8 overs was accurate and consistent with his line and length and bowled really well and Drew only needed 3.1 overs to take 2-5 including a fine caught and bowled chance as Butleigh were blown away.

Ollie Wilkins was in fine form in the field with a catch, a run out and many good stops too.

Wellington’s batting matched their bowling as Arron Campbell and Robin Davies raced away to a 67 run opening stand in 13 overs as both drove well on both side of the wicket.

They were well set when Davies was run out at the non striker’s end for 25, but Campbell continued to 35 and the job was close to been done.

Alex Sparks hit a breezy 14 and the job was done by Zandre Swartz with a six to win the game with to give Wellington 20 points to Butleigh’s one.
