Youth Cricketers Ready for League Start (from Tony Hutchings – WCC Under 13s Team Manager)

Wellington’s young cricketers are set to start their league campaign this weekend with the Under 11s first up on Friday evening (29th April) when they take a trip to the Quantocks to play at scenic Bagborough.

Last year’s league runners up, again under the guidance of experienced Mark Salter, are hoping to go one better than last year, but with many of last year’s successful team now having moved up to the next age group life is going to be tougher.

This year’s indoor sessions have had in excess of 40 youngsters training, so Mark will hopefully find some more gems to join experienced players such as Ollie Hunt and Jacob Hurry and another fruitful year is on the cards.

The Under 13s, managed by Tony Hutchings and bolstered by the influx of a good crop of under 11s, are also on their travels when they travel to North Curry / Curry Rivel on Sunday morning (1 May) hoping to improve on their 4th place from last season.

The Club has made a conscious decision to enter the tougher 11 a-side league with a long term plan of producing more players who will go on to hopefully play at senior level for Wellington in years to come.

The likes of Tom Shannon, and Charlie Knight are stepping up from Under 11s to join players like Ben Eve and James Drohan, so hopefully the task of playing the likes of Taunton Deane and Taunton St Andrews will not prove too daunting and only serve to improve them.

Sadly the Under 15s are short on numbers, as with many clubs in the area, and as we are going to press it looks as though Rich Short is going to struggle to fulfil the planned fixtures. This appears to be a county wide problem once players get to 13/14/15, as even teams like Taunton Deane have withdrawn from the league, and partly why the club is investing so much in coaching and developing youngsters for the future.

Coaching will continue throughout the spring / summer at Wellington School on Monday evenings (6.00pm-7.30pm) for U11 + U13 and any new players would always be welcome.
