Wellington Sunday XI 204-6 Trull 198-9

The new season kicked off with a side based on the Red and Blacks second string taking on Somerset League Division Five side Trull last Saturday.

On a cold and breezy day Trull asked Wellington to bat first and found Trevor Brooks and Kevin Crout in great fettle as they added 89 in 17 overs for the first wicket with Brooks playing well to the third man area with a series of glided glances – he made 32 when he was caught behind by Hedges off of the impressive Ward who took 1-14 in seven pacy overs.

Leo Goodman-Jones joined Crout and added 27 further runs before he was done by a full toss for 12.

Skipper Richard Henwood battled to 17 as the cold conditions affected the whole game, but it was Crout with his capital 74 that was the foundation for the Wellington total of 204-6 – he was out to the penultimate ball of the innings having hit nine fours.

Max Capaldi with 18 including two sixes saw the 200 was passed and Trull would need 205 to record a first win over Wellington in five attempts.

Adrian Lee and Sam Murdock offered Trull no quarter with the opening overs of the home side’s innings as Murdock bowled with good pace and line and trapped E.Barrett LBW with a ball that would have removed middle and leg stumps.

The run out of Ward was a bonus and at 50-3 in 20 overs Trull were behind the rate, but Lake with 33 and White with 32 doubled their score as Wellington did not build on the first half of their time in the field, although Robin Davies with 3-55 in 8 overs of left arm chinaman bowled delightfully and kept going despite conceding one expensive over; good boundary catches from Max Capaldi and Adrian Lee gave him reward.

Coatsdale and Trull skipper Parsons added 70 for the sixth wicket and this took their side to within an ace of the win, but Lee Nichol with 1-26 in 5 and Adrian Lee who came back for a second spell removed them and Sam Murdock kept his nerve when delivering the last over to see Wellington home by six runs and to a good victory.
