Wellington Sunday XI 230-6 Sidmouth Sunday XI 159-7

Wellington Sunday XI recorded their first win at Sidmouth since re-establishing the fixture back in 2005 when Steve Symons and his side came back from the Devon coast with a 71 run win last weekend in a game that saw a fine all round performance from a side that mixed youth and experience well.

Wellington opted to bat first on a fine batting track and saw James Bath take ten off the opening over of the innings; a wicket was lost early on but the excellent Charlie Davies and the reliable Rob Moysey added 74 second wicket runs for Wellington as they repelled Sidmouth, they were particularly severe on Mansfield who bowled fast, but persistently no balled too as he took 2-57 in 8 overs.

Moysey was caught in the covers for 29 and next ball another wicket was lost and Wellington needed to consolidate; this came in the form of Davies and Liam Kubicki who added an excellent 79 in a fourth wicket partnership – Davies steadily accumulated runs all innings and Kubicki with 22 was good value for his runs.

Paul Short and Ali Bunce got Wellington over the 200 mark and saw Davies make it to three figures – the first of the season for Wellington – as he made 106 with 14 fours as he played very well off his legs; he was out with one ball to go in the Wellington innings as they got to 230-6 at tea – Chaplin with 3-36 was Sidmouth’s best bowler.

Sidmouth skipper Griffiths played like a man possessed as his side chased six an over to win; he had 45 on the board out of 52 when he was run out by a combined James Bath/Aks Latifi effort when a call for a single to the covers went very wrong – after this dismissal Sidmouth did not truly threaten the Wellington total.

George Hooper bowled a great spell of seam and bowled better than 1-47 in 8 overs suggests, Ali Bunce with 2-28 in 8 fine overs kept Sidmouth quiet and this pressure was kept up as the innings developed; Paul Short with 1-6 in 6 overs let nothing go, Sam Baycock’s left arm spin saw him use flight well, they gave way to Rob Moysey and Alex Troake and the leg spinners kept good control on the menu for Wellington; Chaplin continued his good game with a knock of 37 as he and Briggs added 53 for Sidmouth’s sixth wicket, but the home side were well behind the clock and they lost one more wicket when James Bath knocked over Claydon in the last over.
