Wellington 2nd XI 149 Weston Super Mare 3rd XI 153-2
This was a disappointing disjointed performance by Wellington 2nd XI in Division Four of the Somerset League at home to Weston Super Mare 3rd XI last Saturday when they visitors – playing their first game in the SCL – romped home as they laid into Wellington’s bowling to achieve their target in 26.2 overs only.
The toss was always going to be important after overnight rain and Weston won it and asked Wellington to bat; sadly for Wellington several players got started, but no one went on to play the big important innings that would have made the target more testing; Trevor Brooks with 23 and Kevin Crout with 14 added 34 runs first up for Wellington before both fell to Penwill who took 4-42 in two spells.
James Bath made a pleasant looking 22 before been bowled by Weston skipper Roberts and in the middle order Mark Salter with 10 and new recruit Darren Davis with 26 made a good impact for his new club and at 120-5 with fifteen overs left Wellington still had the chance to push on with Richard Henwood at the crease making 32, but the innings fell away from 147-7 to 149 all out with four overs left as Curley with 3-21 ended the Red and Blacks effort.
Wellington did not bowl well as Weston Super Mare raced home with 10.4 overs to spare in what had become a 37 over innings for them due to rain; Lomax with 41no batted through and Wheaton with a powerful 65 saw their side to full points; a run out and a wicket for skipper Simon Rudd were Wellington’s rewards in the field as they took nine points and travel to Cheddar 2nd XI next weekend.
