Wellington Sunday XI 212-9 Taunton Deane Sunday XI 195

Wellington Sunday XI made it two wins in two from the first weekend of the 2011 season when they took a seventeen run win away from the Convent Field on Sunday in a good match against WEPL Premier One club Taunton Deane.

Paul Short opted to bat on winning the toss and produced a team showing some of the new players that Wellington have signed for the new season; it was one of these – Charlie Davies, who has joined from Taunton St Andrews, who opened up with Short – after a tight start from Leech and Derbe for the County Town club Short was first to go when his pull shot did not go as planned and he was caught by the keeper.

Davies batted in a fine way and dropped anchor to guide Wellington to a good score as he made a fine debut knock of 45 with six fours and a six, Marc Holloway was timing the ball delightfully before been LBW for 19 and James Bath cracked 25 in good time before been stumped off of leg spinner Ashton.

At 119-6 Wellington were in need of something in this 45 over a side game and it came from the ever reliable Rob Moysey and another new signing; this time Ali Bunce who has joined from North Petherton, they added 84 vital runs for the seventh wicket with Moysey making 28 and Bunce 40 with two huge sixes included – they got Wellington past 200 and this were vital runs it proved.

Sam Murdock, Adrian Lee and Jake Nichol all did their bit to see that Wellington had made a good 212-9 at tea.

Taunton Deane’s openers Hudd and Axon benefited from each been dropped, but when Paul Short held on to a fine low catch off of Rob Moysey to remove Axon for 19 the door was open; Wellington used its extensive spin attack to prize out wickets at regular intervals as Ali Bunce showed with his fine analysis of 9-1-21-2 as he gave nothing away and rattled through his overs, giving such little time to the batsmen to settle.

Rob Moysey got Shaikh to sweep at one and only succeed at spearing the ball high in the air for Aks Latifi to pouch a catch; with fellow Bangladeshi Umar Farooq doing lots with the spinning ball in taking 3-29 in 9 overs Wellington had Taunton Deane at 119-7 in 32 overs and still nearly one hundred runs short of the target, but Leech and Derbe added a fine 63 for the eighth Deane wicket and this always made Wellington think the game could yet slip away, but Paul Short removed any doubt when he bowled Ashton with three balls of the game left to seal a good win for the Red and Blacks.
