Wellington 171-4 Bagborough 117
Wellington made it to the quarter finals of the Baker Cup for the first time since 2007 when they held sway at Somerset League Division Four side Bagborough on Monday evening as Paul Short’s side won by 54 runs in the last over of the home side’s innings.
Bagborough asked Wellington to bat first on winning the toss and found Paul Short and Michael Gill would put on 47 first wicket runs for the Red and Blacks before Mason – by far Bagborough’s best bowler with 3-47 in his five overs – yorked Gill for 17.
Another wicket was lost at 51 before Short really started to up the rate as he played a fine innings of 90no with three sixes in the sixteenth over of the Wellington innings as he took 26 from a Briggers over.
Aks Latifi, Marc Holloway and Max Capaldi gave their skipper great support as Wellington got to 171-4 in 18 overs – the length of the match been pulled in by two overs each innings to ensure that matches are completed in good light.
Bagborough were up for the challenge as Tompkins with 18 and Bishop with 29 gave the required 172 a good go, but they lost wickets too often to be able to really challenge Wellington as Adrian Lee (three) and Tom Baycock (one) got through the top order.
Jake Nichol bowled a tidy spell of medium pace and his 1-25 in four overs was a good effort with pride of place going to Rob Moysey who claimed 5-9 in 4.3 overs to end the home side’s reply in the last over – he is bowling very well so far this season and the leg spin he offers is a potent tool in the Wellington bowling armoury.
James Bath shared the last few overs of the Bagborough innings and his sharp left arm medium pace was a nice variation to be able to offer.
Wellington are into the last eight of the main competition for the first time in three seasons and this means there will be a new name on the Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield for 2010 as Wellington will not be defending the trophy they won in both 2008 and 2009 due to progressing to play away to the winners of the tie between Somerset League Division Three side Fitzhead and WEPL Premier One side Taunton Deane in the Baker Cup Quarter Finals on Monday 24th May from 6.15pm.
