Langport 2nd XI 147 Wellington 2nd XI 148-4

Wellington 2nd XI followed their 1st XI counterparts by staying at the top of the tree at this early stage of the season as they top Division Two of the Somerset League’s Reserves competition after beating Langport at home last weekend by six wickets.

Ross Brayley struck early for Wellington before Crossley with 55 was the bond that got Langport to 147 all told.

Wellington let the newly promoted side get away a little too much early on, but George Coate rallied to end up with 2-42 in 12 overs and Kevin Symons – playing for the first time since last June due to injury – took a fine 3-34 in 8 overs as Wellington chipped away to bowl Langport out with two overs left.

Richard Henwood with a controlled 1-17 in 7 overs did good work, although injury was to strike him as he broke a bone in his hand following an attempt to stop the ball off his own bowling and he will now miss some games.

Skipper Simon Rudd wrapped things up for Wellington with 2-3 late on to see that 148 was required.

Wellington raced home in 26 overs as Kevin Crout and James Bath added 62 opening wicket runs at a rate of six per over before Crout was caught for 28.

There was a maiden Wellington fifty for Bath as he made it to 56 with eight fours and he has started 2010 very well.

Trevor Brooks (18) and Graham Sparks (13) added good middle order runs for Wellington and the job was done by Simon Rudd with 23no and Kevin Symons with 4no as 19 overs remained unused.

The side travel to take on another promoted side in Wells this weekend.
