Belvedere 159-7 Wellington 135

Wellington lost back-to-back home league matches for the first time since 2006 when Weston-Super-Mare based Belvedere recorded their first senior win over the Red and Blacks with this 24 run win last weekend in a match that was played against a backdrop of rain and wind.

Belvedere were asked to take first knock and only realised 47 runs from their first twenty overs as Wellington bowled well initially.

Rowan Varkevisser and new signing James Brown – who has joined from Crowcombe – bowled very well indeed as they gave the Belvedere openers no room and maintained a fine line and length.

Varkevisser let only 12 runs go in seven overs and Brown five in five.

Kevin Symons took up the attack as first change and took 2-40 in 11 good overs as he and skipper Paul Short got the first four wickets to fall as Kolambkar scooped one to Thom Trott off of Short and Alec Short – who kept wicket well – pouched one to give Symons reward as he dismissed Chadwick.

In tandem Symons and Short sent Belvedere to 72-4 in 29 overs and Wellington had a good control of matters, but with 29 runs coming between overs 36 and 39 through Gadd (57) and Tasker (30), Belvedere had made some thirty more runs than they had looked likely to muster.

Short with 3-34 in 11 overs bowled well.

James Brown came back late on and ended with debut figures of 1-8 in 7 overs as Wellington took a wicket with the last ball of the innings as Alec Short ran out Crockett to need 160 to win.

Rob Moysey and Mark Salter added a solid 24 runs for the opening wicket, but when Salter was caught behind for 12 and Moysey was well caught and bowled low down by Hosey for 10 Wellington had lost their openers.

The score dipped to 31-4 and the Red and Blacks were in trouble.

Paul Short and Max Capaldi added 23 fifth wicket runs and were looking solid and set when Short was caught behind.

Capaldi was patiently building an innings and his offering of 22 with two fours was a good one, but was ended when he was stumped.

Alec Short and Thom Trott with a seventh wicket stand of 34 gave Wellington hope of a narrow victory as Short top scored with 26 and Trott made 14, but when Loud was brought back into the attack he got both batsmen in the same over and with Watts getting a wicket too, Wellington were 111-9 with seven overs left, but a fine 24 run last wicket stand between James Brown (21no) and Rowan Varkevisser gave Wellington renewed hope as Brown hit a mighty six and they got the required target down into the twenties, but Kolambkar with 2-11 in 10.3 fine overs ended the charge and Belvedere had a 24 run win and 32 points to go home with.

Wellington took 13 points and host Westlands this weekend.
