Taunton Deane 2nd XI 198-9 Wellington 201-8

Wellington collected a fourth West of England Premier League Somerset Division success in five games and so leapfrogged their opponents in collecting nineteen excellent points from this two wicket win.

Taunton Deane 2nd XI won the toss and opted to bat but were soon on the back foot when Luke Desave and Will Derrick sliced through to make them 8-2 as Burgess and Smith were on their way as more good new ball bowling was delivered by the pair.

Summers with 28 and visiting skipper Warren (31) steadied matters with a third wicket stand of 45 before Ryan Aingworth ended the stand.

Arron Campbell applied control to the Wellington attack with his spell of off spin that realised 9-2-21-2 and, along with Neil Hendy’s accurate medium pace weighing in with 1-29 in nine overs, the Deane 2nd XI line up was rocking at 116-7 before former Wellington player Russ Jones attacked to the tune of 58 in 55 balls to inject runs into his team’s effort with the bat.

Johnson with 18no aided him to get his side to close to 200.

Jack Beal took the important wicket of Jones as Luke Desave ended with 3-36 in nine overs and Will Derrick 1-28 in seven to see Wellington would need 199 to win in 45 overs after tea.

Arron Campbell took the mantle of opener with Nathan Roberts and got his side going in a fine manner as he attacked from the off making 36 in 28 balls with five fours and a six after adding 27 first up with Roberts.

Ben Evett counterattacked well too for 11 and at 77-4 the run rate was good, but wicket retention was vital too.

Alex Sparks was establishing himself all the time and in conjunction with Luke Desave they took the score to 125-5 when Desave was out for 26 in 33 balls with five fours.

Jack Beal struck 20 in eleven balls with five fours to get Wellington to 152-7 when he was out and so the Red and Blacks needed around fifty to win.

Alex Sparks was now timing the ball well and added 19 for the eighth wicket with Ryan Aingworth, but with overs remaining plentiful wickets to play with only numbered two and it was Will Derrick who now arrived at the crease and with a fine robust knock of seven not out in 20 balls he aided Sparks to see Wellington over the line with a knock of 66no (seven fours in 73 balls) that was every bit as good as his effort the previous week.

Wellington won with 9.5 overs to spare and are up to seventh with two to play – a visit to Taunton St Andrews 2nd XI this weekend and then a visit from Taunton to round matters off on the Bank Holiday weekend Saturday.
