Taunton A 155-8 Wellington 97
At 50-2 in six overs chasing another hundred or so to win in the Baker Cup’s Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield Final Wellington were in contention, but a middle order slide to 70-8 put paid to their hopes of lifting the Shield for a third time to go with successes over a decade ago in 2008 and 2009.
Wellington took on fellow WEPL Somerset Division side Taunton A at Staplegrove CC on Monday evening and this saw the County Town team win the toss and opt to bat first.
Through Woodall with 28 and Solanki with 27 they got away to a 54 run opening stand before Sam Whitefield’s off spin literally turned matters in Wellington’s favour as his 2-37 in five overs reduced Taunton A to 63-3.
Cue a 68 run fourth wicket stand between Abell (52) and Kelly (14) to hoist Taunton A to 131-4 before Luke Desave with three wickets in one over arrested this with Clark’s 16no taking Taunton A to 155-8 in their 20 overs as both Will Derrick and Jack Beal caught well for Wellington.
Arron Campbell and Sam Whitefield kicked off the Wellington reply with a 25 run opening stand as Weatherill was taken for 22 from his two overs, but he did take two wickets all the same.
Campbell made a capital 34 with two sixes and was going for a third when he was caught on the boundary’s edge.
When batting with Ben Evett who made 14 the momentum was with Wellington, but the loss of both skipper and keeper was a blow to Wellington and they never truly recovered from it as Fitt with 5-26 in five overs took the man of the match award.
Callum Hendy, with 16 not out, played another good knock in this series of games as Wellington bowed out by a margin of 58 runs.
