Wembdon 138-8 Wellington 108-8

Wellington will concentrate on the Shield component of the Baker Cup’s suite of competitions after they lost in the Cup First Round at home to fellow WEPL Somerset Division side Wembdon at home last Thursday evening in a game that was played at the third time of asking given all the recent poor weather.

The Red and Blacks took the pink ball first up and made an electric start as Will Derrick and Macaulay Campbell reduced Wembdon to 6-3 as each of Brooks, Brockwell and Dickins were back in the hutch as Campbell’s fine caught and bowled chance and a reaction catch from Tom Chambers along with Ben Evett’s good take behind the sticks made a real difference.

Slowly and surely Lewin with 25 and Puddy with 57 grew their side back into the game and although Sam Whitefield’s off spin realised 3-32 a late rally from Wembdon stalwart Bingham with 31 took the Bridgwater based side to 138-8 in 20 overs as Ryan Aingworth and Jack Beal also took wickets.

Brockwell and Bingham bowled a controlled spell for Wembdon first up and made Wellington be 17-2 before Alex Sparks with 21 crisp runs started a rally, but a direct hit run out saw his knock ended.

Tom Chambers with 38 and Jack Beal with 27 each slammed three sixes and when they were adding 57 fourth wicket runs for Wellington the Red and Blacks were in with a chance, but Cook with 3-30 put paid to this and from then on it was a case of Wembdon winning by 30 runs as Wellington batted their 20 overs out and will now travel to Brompton Ralph of the West Somerset League to contest a match that will take place on Monday 7th June from 6.15pm
