Taunton 185 Wellington 186-8
Wellington took a visit to Taunton CC on Sunday and came away with a two wicket win in the last over as an entertaining game offered much in the Spring sunshine.
Taunton, who Wellington will be playing at 1st XI level in the Somerset Division of WEPL this season, opted to bat first and a good slip catch from Arron Campbell saw that the Wellington skipper had removed his opposite number Kelly with the score on nine off of Luke Desave.
Quick and Abell reacted positively to this situation with a 66 run second wicket stand that was propelling Taunton towards a good total on one of their usual ‘road’ like batting tracks, but Abell, having made 32, tried an audacious shot and was bowled by new recruit Ryan Aingworth who took 2-37 in eight overs of brisk medium pace.
Quick with 52 played well before he became another Aingworth victim with the score at 110-3 and it was 119-4 when Will Derrick threw down the stumps with a rocket of a throw to run out Solanki.
Woodall with 36 and Redrup with 17 were the last telling contributions of the Taunton innings as Arron Campbell (2-46 in 8) bowled a good second spell of off spin, Paul Short with 1-37 in 8 had good control with further off spin and it was down to seam to wrap up the Taunton innings with ten balls going unused as Luke Desave and Macaulay Campbell closed matters out.
Steedman reduced Wellington to 3-2 early on in their reply, but Nathan Roberts and Arron Campbell grew into their third wicket stand of 62 as Roberts made an excellent 32.
Skipper Campbell played well all around the wicket as he made a capital 50 before giving way to others with the Wellington score on 104.
Callum Hendy with 16 and Paul Short with 13 worked well with Luke Desave who made 23 to get the Red and Blacks to 155-7.
It was the enterprising play of Ryan Aingworth who hit a six on his way to 27no that saw 28 runs added for the eighth wicket with Jacob Hurry and despite Hurry been dismissed with three runs needed for victory Will Derrick saw that Wellington got over the line with four balls to spare.
It is off to Somerset League Division Three club Broadway and Horton CC on Saturday 17th April and Somerset League Division Two club Lympsham and Belvedere CC on Sunday 18th April as pre-season 2021 continues for Wellington CC.
