Wellington Reds, Wellington Cricket Club’s winter sporting section, were able to get a game in on the weekend before Christmas when their Taunton and District Saturday League Division Three match was moved from what would have been a very boggy situation in West Somerset to the all weather facility at Parkway in Bridgwater and Connor Sellick’s team came away with a point through a well worked equaliser from Joe Conway Junior and are up to eighth in the thirteen team division with eleven points from eight games, meaning there are sixteen to play split between ten at home and six away.

On a wet day that followed two or three thoroughly wet days there was little chance of play on grass so the Exmoor team arranged to play on an artificial surface at Bridgwater and Taunton College’s property in an effort to beat the elements and they and the League are thanked for their efforts here.

Wellington Reds went behind when a neat free kick left Tyler Fyfe, standing in as goalkeeper for the Reds, static as it was placed into the left hand corner of the net.

Reds battled after they had fallen behind and this was exemplified by Ash Grist who used all his power to shake off the challenges offered by several Exmoor defenders and he shot just wide; a great effort all in all.

Reds were the better team in the second half and deserved their equaliser that saw a ball whipped in from the right hand side at a free kick and it and Joe Conway Junior both ended up in the back of the net and parity had been achieved.

Both sides pressed thereafter for a winner with Tobi Jenkins pulling the strings, but a draw was about fair as Wellington used all their resources with Macaulay Campbell and Vince Milton offering fresh impetus in the second half after coming on.

Reds will play second division side Norton Fitzwarren Firsts in the third round of the League’s Rowbarton Charity Cup on Wednesday 20th January at the same venue as was used for this game with an 8.00pm KO.

At the moment there are no more league games scheduled.
