Wellington CC – Pre Match Preview Piece for Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd August 2020
Wellington 1st XI go into their fifth of seven bubble matches within the West of England Premier League’s structure this weekend with a trip to play Taunton Deane CC, who would, ordinarily have been playing at the Premier One level following their success in winning the Premier Two (Bristol and Somerset) title in 2019.
Arron Campbell’s side travel to the Convent Field with two wins and two cancellations from their four games so far and have six points which places them joint top with fellow Somerset Division side Minehead.
The two successes posted so far, on the road at Wembdon and at home to Bridgwater, have both been marked by splendid performances with both bat and ball as Wembdon were restricted to 170 on their own patch and this was chased down for the loss of just five wickets and the Bridgwater success was a splendid affair as one of Premier One’s longest serving teams was beaten in searing heat that saw their playing potencies negated.
Wellington will travel with confidence and belief and will recall a thumping Baker Cup First Round win by seven wickets in May 2019 when the Green and Blacks were put to the sword by Wellington in their run chase.
Wellington 2nd XI will be hosting Stoke St Gregory, who would have been in Division Eight South in this, their opening season in the County League, in their Somerset League bubble and will be looking to build on their current fourth place which sees them be 21 points behind leaders llton 2nd XI.
An away game with Division Six South’s Broadway and Horton 2nd XI and a home game with Division Eight South’s Ilminster 4th XI, on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August, await Alex Troake’s side after this weekend.
The Sunday XI has four games on the road to play before season’s end and the first of these is at a new venue in Morebath CC who play their League cricket in the West Somerset League’s Division Two.
