Wellington 3rd XI 206-8 Huish and Langport 2nd XI 140
Wellington 3rd XI took on Huish and Langport 2nd XI at Wellington Playing Field on Bank Holiday Monday in Division Seven South of the Somerset League in front of a good number of supporters as the fine weather continued and the team pulled to within eight points of Crewkerne 2nd XI in their efforts to seal another season at this level and the last game of the season – away to Long Sutton 2nd XI on Saturday 31st August – is going to be pivotal as they seek the points required as Crewkerne 2nd XI hosts Middlezoy 2nd XI on the same date.
Here Wellington’s third string won the toss and batted first, but saw David Derrick was out with the score on four; Simon Burrough and Andy Hurry added 63 for the second wicket in good style before Hurry was caught and bowled by Powell for 33 as this bowler took 3-27 to be the basement side’s best offering with the ball.
Burrough made it to 24 before been third out at 69.
Two more wickets fell before three figures were posted by Wellington, but from this point Ben Evett with 41, Des Campbell with 16 and Richard Henwood with 40no saw that full batting points would be claimed.
Tom Shannon was resolute as he added 38 unbroken runs for the ninth wicket with vice captain Henwood.
The visitors have won just once all season, but they batted with heart all the same as Foyne hit 20 as opener and G.Gough 24 in the middle order, but Wellington chipped away as Tom Shannon with 2-17 in six overs broke through early and Ryan Henwood did a good stint of eight overs up the hill taking 1-42.
Andy Hurry with 2-43 in eight overs bowled another manful spell in warm conditions, but it was Ben Evett who reprised his bowling in league action for the first time in several years with 2-14 in six overs who did a trick for his side with some good flight coming into play.
With G.Williams-Pritchard aggravating his side injury sustained when he bowled when it came to his turn to bat having made a decent 13 the game was ended when Alex Derbridge bowled Swaine as the previously named player could not resume his knock and Wellington have a chance to secure another season at this level next week.
