Wembdon 251 Wellington 250
Wellington need three points to be mathematically safe in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League and so compete at this level in 2020 despite this agonising one run loss to Wembdon at home over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Despite the result the Red and Blacks still collected ten points and this has seen them go a long way to securing another season in WEPL.
With Yeovil having 178 points Wellington are 20 clear of this total and with 22 being the maximum points tally available this is where the three points tally required from the final game of the season at North Petherton on Saturday 31st August comes from.
On a scorching day Wembdon won the toss and, unsurprisingly, chose to bat on winning the toss and they saw Pope launch himself into the Wellington attack as he clubbed 44 in quick time and with it gave his side a good start, but Wellington wrested control as Arron Campbell and Neil Hendy joined the attack and Wembdon slumped to 105-6 as Campbell took 1-21 in ten overs and Hendy 3-27 in ten overs too as both bowled in tandem and really brought their side into the game.
Lowe and Pigden added 37 for Wembdon’s seventh wicket before Watts smashed 84 at a rate of two runs a ball and this hoisted Wembdon to a final total of 251 in 49.1 overs before a good boundary catch from Ollie Wilkins saw him be last man out off of Jack Beal (2-41).
There were wickets too for Luke Desave, Rob Moysey and Sam Whitefield.
Sam Whitefield and Nathan Roberts added 54 most solid runs for Wellington’s opening wicket as they built a platform to work from; it was broken when Wembdon’s overseas player Serame got Roberts out for 14 caught behind as he turned the ball wickedly.
Tom Chambers with 18 and Neil Hendy with 26 made excellent runs as all the time Whitefield was compiling a quality knock that saw him play so well all round the park.
He was sixth out for 110 and this was a superb effort that had given the side a real chance of success against the second placed side.
Luke Desave with 13 got the score to 217-7 when he was out and this was the cue for Jack Beal and Aks Latifi to attack and take the score to 250-8 with two overs left as they made 26no and 16 respectively, but Annison with 5-45 came back and cleaned matters up for Wembdon to see that they won by the narrowest of margins.
