Wellington U13 46 Taunton St Andrews U13 47-9
Wellington U13 had an eventful Friday and ended up on the wrong end of a one wicket defeat as Taunton St Andrews scraped home at The Wyvern Club,in the Taunton and District Youth League U13 11 a side West Division.
With all the bad weather and a backlog of senior cup games the first thing needed was to find a pitch so the fixture was reversed as ‘The Saints’ hosted the fixture on Bishop Fox’s School Field.
Wellington were inserted on a damp track and so runs were at a premium as the ball was on top and James Weymouth was first out for 2 bringing Patrick Cole and Tom Hopkins together.
This was the only worthwhile stand in the innings as they hit 11 and 10 to lay the foundations to push on towards 100 which would have been useful.
The hosts then got in to their stride as nobody else could get into double figures, so the extras totalling 12 ended up the top score in a total of 46 with nearly half the overs unused.
Wellington set about the task of bowling out St Andrews with gusto as Harry Clarke-Hawkins and Lewie Harrison were in amongst the wickets early as the home side’s top score in the top 8 batsmen was 5 getting Wellington in sight of an unlikely victory.
Harrison bowled through taking 4-11 in his 4 overs, but the Saints Ethan McMurdo held firm as Tom Hopkins (1) and James Weymouth (2) grabbed further wickets getting St Andrews to 9 down.
McMurdo though wouldn’t be denied as he finished 11no as the winning runs were brought up in the 15th over.
