Taunton Deane 2nd XI 148-5 Wellington 149-4

Wellington are up to third in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League after the Club’s Groundstaff pulled out all of the stops to get the game on against a backdrop of rain and lots of it in the run up to the game between two of the three sides who were promoted from the Somerset League in 2018.

Massive thanks go to Des Campbell, Andy Campbell and Arron Campbell in the days prior to the game, particularly on the Friday, and on the day itself with the team getting involved once the action was due to be delivered.

Standing umpires Chris Long and Martin Veater are warmly thanked too for helping to make sure that action was of the cricketing variety for those who watched.

On to the game itself saw Taunton Deane 2nd XI win the toss and bat and this saw them lost two wickets for just eight runs as the excellent Luke Desave was in the finest of form with the ball as he took 4-7 in eight overs all told delivered in two spells in what was a 38 overs per side event.

Deane were scoring slowly despite Bellamy trying to force the pace and making 62 all told and with just over 50 on the board with the 20 over mark having been passed Wellington were in good form.

Osborne with 50 played a neat little knock and this saw Deane added nearly 100 runs from the last 18 overs as Desave took two wickets in his second spell and there was one for Arron Campbell too…

Neil Hendy let just 14 runs go from his eight overs.

Wellington needed to score at the thicker end of four runs per over to win a fourth game of the season and such a notion looked a long way off at 6-3 in two overs as Chilcott and T.Burgess were in form with the ball for Deane’s reserves.

Ben Evett and Arron Campbell took the Red and Blacks score up to 28 as Evett cracked 12 in 15 balls, but when he was the second Burgess wicket it was hard again for Wellington.

However from this point there was no further loss as Arron Campbell and Luke Desave joined forces to add an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 121 to take their side over the line with 3.1 overs to spare.

Campbell played a robust innings of 39no in 104 balls with two fours and a six and Desave registered a crisp 67no in 80 balls with nine fours and a six as they dominated the game and thus the outcome which gave Wellington 16 points to Deane’s 3 and their highest league position since the end of the 2013 season.
