Wellington’s development U11 side found things tough when not only the rain, but a tornado blew through as they hosted the Deane girls at Sampford Arundel on Sunday morning.

Batting first the visitors dealt with the wet conditions best as they nudged the ball around and apart from Liam Buddin getting a wicket in the second over, chances were few and far between.

Bowling with a wet ball is never easy and this contributed to a number of wides which added to the visitors total of 282 as the only other wicket to fall went to Robin Hill late on.

Buddin and Ben Briddon were first in to bat and they took the score nicely to 212 before Alex Acton and William Box pushed the total to 220 at the half way stage.

The middle overs belonged to the Deane girls as Flossie Hillman and Robin Hill couldn’t add to the tally before skipper Charlie Young and Nerys Jones saw the total to 225 at the close.

This was a victory for perseverance as the weather probably should have won the day, but 16 youngsters got a game of cricket completed and valuable experience was gained by all.
