Chard 115 Wellington 116-4

Wellington 1st XI added the scalp of current West of England Premier League Somerset Division leaders Chard to their current ever growing list of impressive results following T20 success over Taunton Deane A and Taunton and an opening league win of 2019 over last season’s WEPL Somerset Division runners up Frome in recent weeks.

Chard opted to bat on winning the toss, but saw Will Derrick struck early as he removed Mawdsley with the score on 9, but the home side steadied themselves as Dalwood and Dening added 52 for the second wicket as they made 17 and 46 respectively and the home side were regaining ground.

However the Red and Blacks, through Neil Hendy’s accuracy and Arron Campbell’s guile, induced a collapse from 74-2 to 115 all out in just 32.4 overs with Hendy taking 5-21 in ten fine overs and the skipper 2-26 in the same quantity with Sam Whitefield ending matters with 2-1 in ten balls.

Wellington had 50 overs to get the required runs and so Tom Chambers and Neil Hendy set off in good form, but both had departed by the time the score had reached 26.

This was the cue for Sam Whitefield to make a masterful 56no that was the fulcrum to see Wellington over the line as he was supported all the way by those at the other end with Jack Beal, Arron Campbell and Rob Moysey all doing a sterling job to see that the job was done and done well.

Wellington got over the line by six wickets with 19.1 overs unused and took 20 points to Chard’s 2 and the side sit sixth in what looks like will be a most competitive division for 2019.
