Wellington Sunday XI 169 Wombats Sunday XI 132
A good last weekend of the season for Wellington CC ended with the Sunday XI, champions in their own right in their SCS sponsored League and with only one defeat all told, claiming a friendly double over Wombats in what was a most pleasant way to conclude play for 2018.
Oli Beale took charge in Macaulay Campbell’s absence and opted to bat first on winning the toss and he saw Aks Latifi and Will Derrick add 24 first up with Derrick smashing 17 with one six and Latifi 21, also with a six.
Beale himself made 18, but there was a wobble at 78-5 as Whysall with 2-20 saw that the side that now occupies Bishops Lydeard CC’s old ground fought their way back into the game.
Ben Evett with a punchy 53 with two sixes and Arron Campbell with 39 added 75 for the sixth wicket and this brought Wellington back into the ascendancy; however the tail was blown away as Bendle took two wickets with the four balls that he bowled to see that the Red and Blacks were shot out for 169 in 32.4 overs.
Ben Evett took two wickets as he opened up and effected the bizarre run out of Smith to make Wombats 18-3.
Bendle with 21 steadied the middle order, but Alex Derbridge trapped him LBW in the end.
Fooks with 15 did same until Rob Moysey got him and it was nearing the end of the game at 71-8, but a spirited stand between Wombats skipper York-Smith with 39no and J.Burbidge with 15 for the ninth wicket added 54 and this held Wellington up for some time, but Ben Evett’s return to the attack and that of Oli Beale ended matters in the Red and Blacks favour by some 37 runs with 2.3 overs left unused.
A pleasing Sunday season for the Club and one that has seen the top honours that are available to the side gained for the third time in five seasons.
