Wellington 182 Street 161
Wellington are well placed to achieve third place in the Premier Division of the Somerset League for 2018 having won well against potential runners up Street over the Bank Holiday Weekend and with one game left to play, away to Temple Cloud on Saturday 1st September, it would need the Bristol based side to take all of the 70 points (they play away to potential SCL Champion side Taunton Deane 2nd XI on Sunday 2nd September) on offer to them this season and deny Wellington many points themselves; the best way to sort this out would be with a tenth win of the season for the Red and Blacks.
Win number nine came by a margin of 21 runs after batting first and carving out a total that, in the end, was good, but had not started well.
On winning the toss Wellington opted to bat first, but were 8-3 as Higgs and King were in vogue with the ball for Street.
Arron Campbell with 12 steadied matters and he had made half of the runs on the board when he was fourth out at 24, but steady play from Mark Bray with 23 got the score past fifty and matters were improving for Wellington; they were rapidly made better by Aks Latifi and Luke Desave who made 40 and 46 respectively in adding 58 for the sixth wicket in a fine display of counter attacking.
Ben Evett and Thom Trott continued this way of play with 14 and 17 between them and with Pete Sanderson adding a six in his late innings knock it was a total of 182 for Wellington with four balls left.
Trotman was the key Street man to remove as although the visitors came to within 20 or so of victory his knock of 68 was the only one of substance.
Wellington’s varied attack kept chipping away with good fielding and ground work aiding the attack to take wickets often.
Luke Desave, now back to full fitness with the ball, took 1-27 in nine pacy overs and Will Derrick with 1-39 in seven overs got the opening wicket.
Spin in the person of Arron Campbell and Sam Whitefield only conceded 57 runs in sixteen overs and with Neil Hendy’s accurate medium pace taking 3-22 in nine overs Street, Trotman apart, just did not get to grips with chasing 182.
Pete Sanderson finished matters and Wellington had 34 points to Street’s 18 and a good result at Temple Cloud to end the season this coming weekend will see third place snapped up.
