Wellington 3rd XI 157-7 Lydford 2nd XI 160-6
On a hot Bank Holiday Monday afternoon in front of a good number of spectators Wellington 3rd XI was edged out by four wickets in this Somerset League Division Seven South match by Lydford 2nd XI who held their nerve to recover from 109-6 to win with no further loss of wickets.
Richard Henwood took charge of the side for this game and he opted to bat first and it was he and Dave Luxton who took first knock for Wellington as 18 runs were added for the first wicket, but when Henwood was well caught at slip Lydford had a wicket.
Callum Hendy joined Luxton and they took the score into the forties before three wickets were lost for one run with Luxton’s good knock of 22 coming to an end in this block.
This saw Macaulay Campbell and Tyler Fyfe buckle down and 64 fine fifth wicket runs for Wellington’s third string and this subdued the Lydford attack for some time.
Fyfe’s improved batting ability realised a score of 20 as Campbell got to 50 not out towards the end of the innings and these two young players can be proud of their efforts.
Rob Moysey with 17 and Simon Burrough with 12 got Wellington to 157-7 in 40 overs at tea as Lydford’s attack shared the wickets around with Gill taking 2-20 and Cole 2-17 in eight and seven overs respectively.
Olly Hunt’s first senior wicket gave Wellington a good start as R.Fowler was caught behind by Callum Hendy, but an 87 run second wicket stand between T.Fowler and J.Barnes put Lydford’s second string in command, but the game turned in Wellington’s favour as Lydford slumped to 109-6 through Macaulay Campbell and Rob Moysey delivering seam and spin to good effect to take 2-27 and 3-25, but the partnership of Harvey who ended the game with a runner and H.Barnes who added 51 unbroken runs saw their side home and to 32 points to Wellington’s 13.
