Castle Cary 198 Wellington 2nd XI 200-2

Wellington 2nd XI secured a very decent third place in Division Four of the Somerset League as they signed off their 2017 season with an eight wicket home win over already relegated Castle Cary last weekend.

The visitors chose to bat first and were indebted to their skipper J.Elsworth who made 59 from his position as opener as Atkins, Leach and Keirl with 29, 42 and 14 respectively saw that their side would very nearly gather full batting points.

Jake Nichol, who has had a fine season for Wellington’s second string in 2017, took 2-14 in nine excellent overs of seam bowling and was accurate and controlled throughout.

Thom Trott took 1-39 in eight overs and with 2-37 from Ryan Adams Wellington were working through the Cary order in an effective fashion.

Rob Moysey with 3-19 in 7.3 overs saw the end of the Cary innings with around an over to go as his leg spin did a good job once more.

Trevor Brooks and Moysey gave Wellington a fine start as they chased 199 to win with an 87 run opening wicket stand as they dominated proceedings.

Brooks made a capital 52 and with this as support Moysey then kicked on to make 90 and virtually seal the deal for his side as he played a sparkling knock.

Kevin Crout with 37no and Lewis Sparks saw the game was won with some overs to spare and give Wellington’s second string a 35 point haul.

Third place following promotion this time last year is a good outcome for the side and they may even get to go up once more as the SCL is likely to have to undertake some structural changes ahead of the 2018 season.
