Wellington Midweek XI 168-6 Ashbrittle Midweek XI 163-8

Wellington Midweek XI were involved in a really good T20 game with Ashbrittle at Appley last Thursday evening as the Red and Blacks continued their series of social matches against local sides with this five run win that was played out in hot sunshine and with a good number of spectators from both sides watching the encounter the atmosphere was just about perfect.

Jack Beal won the toss for Wellington and chose to bat first and saw Ben Evett who played another energetic innings and 1st XI Captain Alex Sparks, playing for the first time in a month due to injury, added 46 in seven overs; they were split when Sparks played on for 12 from the bowling of Ben Franks who took 3-24 in his four overs.

Evett played some audacious shots in making 49 and was bowled by Gavin Dawes (2-43) playing the ‘ramp’ shot.

Arron Campbell with a quick tempo 25 and Luke Desave with 31no gave Wellington momentum in the middle order and this was added to by Jack Beal and Kayden Hine who each made eleven to see Wellington to a most decent 168-6 in their twenty overs.

Macaulay Campbell and Tyler Fyfe took the new ball for Wellington and each took a wicket as Luke Desave and Kayden Hine each accepted a catch apiece, but in this part of the game Andy Hill and Matt Sheppard had given Ashbrittle a 44 run base.

Rob Moysey and Ollie Beale bowled leg-spin in tandem and reduced the ‘Ashes’ to 83-5 and Wellington were in the box seat, but a sixty run stand for the sixth wicket between Alfie Venner-Woodcock and Gavin Dawes who made fine knocks of 51 and 26 respectively brought the home side back into vogue in the game and it took a wicket maiden from Arron Campbell and a last over costing just five runs from Alex Sparks to keep Wellington’s perfect record in these sort of games in 2017 in tact as Mark White with 13no did all he could to get his side over the line.

Afterwards a barbecue was enjoyed by all involved and this completed a most enjoyable evening with the return match set to be played at Wellington on Thursday 3rd August.
