Wembdon 239-8 Wellington 186 (by Alex Sparks)

Wellington approach the midway point of the season in 6th place after a 53 run defeat to an in-form Wembdon side. This represents a decent first half of the season and a good recovery after losing the first 4 games.

Wembdon won the toss and chose to bat first. Will Derrick taking the new ball, took 2 key wickets dismissing Bingham and Puddy cheaply. When Desave ran out Stone for 2, Wembdon were 13-3 and in some early trouble. It was skipper Brockwell and Pidgen who took a counter attacking approach and got Wembdon back into the game, finding the boundary on numerous occasions. Hewson was introduced into the attack, and he broke this dangerous partnership, bowling Pidgen for 40.

Wellington knew they still had work to do whilst the in-form Brockwell was still at the crease and he was all set for a 50 before Campbell had him caught at long off by Will Derrick for 49. Campbell also bowled Vickery to finish with 2-37 from his 10 overs.

With Wembdon at 130-6, their innings needed re-building. It was Brendan Pope and Josh Henry who put together a match winning partnership for the 7th wicket. With Pope taking on the bowlers and Henry rotating the strike, they took Wembdon to maximum batting points and left them on course for a competitive score. They were both dismissed in successive balls by Hendy but the lower order managed to get Wembdon to 239.

Wellington came out confident after recent good performance with the bat, but after some early boundaries Brockwell dismissed both openers to leave Wellington 2 down early on in their innings. When Bingham was bought into the attack and got the third wicket, Wellington needed to rebuild and Thom Trott and Ben Evett took this on to get the innings going again. It was then unfortunate that a mix up saw Evett run out and then Trott adjusted lbw the next over to leave Wellington 82-5.

Skipper Luke Desave and Aks Latifi came together and rebuilt the Wellington innings with a handy 6th wicket partnership. With Wellington in a similar position to Wembdon after 35 overs, the game was shaping up for a close finish. Wembdon then struck back by dismissing Latifi for 15 and Hendy cheaply but Desave was still going nicely and reached his 2nd 50 of the season. Unfortunately for Wellington, Puddy dismissed Desave just after he has reached his 50 and the game was almost up for Wellington. Jack Beal with 15 kept Wellington going and with Hewson striking a couple of boundaries, Wellington maintained some hope going into the final overs. However, the return of Pope saw a good piece of fielding from his own bowling account for Beal run out and then a clinical Yorker finished the game next ball.

Wellington have a tough fixture next Saturday with a trip to league leaders Weston Super Mare, but go into the 2nd half of the season with optimism after some good performances in the past few weeks.
