Wellington U15s 120 – 7 Langport U15s 123 – 7
Wellington’s senior youth team were on the wrong end of a nailbiting finish when they went down by 1 wicket at Langport on Sunday morning, in the Taunton and District Youth league U15 LMS League.
Batting first Wellington were soon in trouble as Fabian Reah and Ben White were back in the hutch without troubling the scorers inside the 1st over.
Ben Wardell joined captain Ollie Beale at the crease and looked in good nick as he reached 7 before having his stumps shattered leaving the visitors reeling at 14 – 3 at the end of the 4th which brought in ‘keeper Jacob Hurry.
This proved to be the stand of the innings as first watchfully and then with increasing momentum they saw the score passed 90 before Beale reached his retiring score of 50 and then the push for late runs saw wickets perish and even Beale returning couldn’t add to his 50 as Hurry finished unbeaten on 26 in a total of 120 -7.
The hosts set off at a rattling pace as Somerset player Ben Richardson struck impressive boundaries and not even losing his opening partner run out backing up could prevent Langport reaching 60 – 1 at the end of the 6th.
Up stepped Tom Shannon, returning from injury, who sent down a double wicket maiden and bowling in tandem with White, who, in the 10th over, took 3 wickets, put Wellington back in control as Huish stumbled to 87 – 6 entering the last 8.
Beale returned to remove last man Larkins, which left the Somerset player to bat alone with still 34 required but plenty of overs to get them.
Beale rotated his bowlers looking to win the game and with 3 runs required an arrow throw into Hurry behind the stumps who removed the bails for what would have been a great victory but sadly the decision went against the visiting team and 1 more scoring shot was enough to see the hosts home.
The boys have 1 more game next Sunday, in what has been an enjoyable season as the club have sent out an independent U15 side for the 1st time in several seasons.
