Wellington 172 North Petherton 167 (by Alex Sparks)
For the 2nd week in a row Wellington were involved in a game that went down to the last wicket partnership. This time they came out with the win as Luke Desave capped a fine all round display by bowling Winter to the elation of Wellington players and supporters to secure a 5 run win and a first league win of the season.
On the annual Ladies day, Wellington won the toss and chose to bat but it was North Petherton that got off to a good start as their overseas player Porteous bowled an accurate spell and took two early wickets. This bought Sparks and Hine to the crease and they started to rebuild the innings but the introduction of spin from Paul Short and Ian Blackwell halted the momentum and a double strike left Wellington at 40-4.
It was then that Sparks and Desave put together a crucial partnership and got Wellington back into the game. With a measured approach against a disciplined North Petherton attack they managed to rotate the strike well and put away any loose balls on offer. Sparks fell for a battling 37 but Desave carried on to reach his first 50 of the season.
With a platform set for the last 10 overs Desave and Latifi started to accelerate, taking the attack to the economical Blackwell with 3 big sixes. Desave fell victim to a sharp run out for 64 but had played a superb hand. Latifi with 17 and solid contributions from the lower order left Wellington with 172 to defend. Porteous with 5-36 was the pick of the North Petherton bowlers.
Wellington knew they needed a good start and Desave carried on from his batting with the early wickets or Irish and Williams. North Petherton then took the upper hand as Porteous and Short batted positively and put their team in a good position at 70-2.
It was the introduction of Dom Drew which swung the game back in Wellington’s favour as he dismissed Porteous, Irish and Blackwell in a fine spell of 3-13 from his 10 overs. Wellington were also on song in the field with some good catching from Mark Bray and a good piece of fielding from Desave to run out Bowditch in this period.
Short was still at the crease playing a fine hand and with him at the crease North Petherton were on track for the win. It was Campbell that removed the key man for a well made 36 and when Ian Hewson dismissed Pope and left North Petherton at 155-9, Wellington were almost over the line.
Briffett however had other ideas as he appeared to be steering North Petherton to their target with some intelligent batting. But, with 5 runs required Desave summoned up one more moment and clean bowled Winter to secure a fine win for Wellington and ensure they kept up their 100% winning record on ladies day.
A massive thanks would like to be said for all the ladies that helped and attended the annual ladies day. Special thanks also to Ivor Mitchell for filling in with scoring duties at short notice.
