Wellington 132-5 Taunton St Andrews 110-5

Wellington continued the good start to their Somerset Cricket Board Indoor League Division A campaign with a 22 run win over a spirited and youthful Taunton St Andrews side and as a result now sit joint top of the table with two wins from two games along with Bridgwater writes Alex Sparks.

Wellington were asked to bat but with TSA armed with a new swinging ball things didn’t get off to as good a start as in the previous game as both Alex Sparks and Paul Short fell early for 6.

Debutant Mark Bray led the recovery for Wellington and he made it to a deserved 25 with some positive running between the wickets.

Despite the early wickets Wellington continued to score at a healthy run rate, helped by TSA contributing a significant number of extras to the scoreboard.

With Bray retiring the platform was set for the final few overs and Mark Salter (19) and Ian Hewson (15 not out) played well to steer Wellington to a competitive 132-5 at the halfway point.

Wellington went out to field confident with a good score on the board but found the swinging ball difficult to control at the start of the innings and this enabled TSA to get off to a quick start.

Sparks turned to Paul Short (0-24) and he applied the control Wellington needed – dragging the required run rate up and bringing Wellington back into the game.

Sparks (1-30) and Beal (2-35) carried on the good work and recovered well from their earlier spells to chip away at the TSA batting line up with wickets in the middle overs.

With Wellington now on top it was left to Ian Hewson (0-20) to show his control with the swinging ball and close out the innings for Wellington despite Woodland’s (36 not out) best efforts for TSA.

Wellington are back in action on Sunday 6th November at 7.05pm GMT against Ashbrittle.
