Wellington 2nd XI 178-5 Uphill Castle 2nd XI 93

Wellington 2nd XI secured promotion from Division Five of the Somerset League courtesy of this fine 85 run win over their Uphill Castle counterparts and now go into the last game of the season four points behind Trull and with a shoot out for the title next Saturday.

Wellington have a long journey to make to Peasedown St John and have the tougher task on paper as Trull host Banwell and Churchill, but they have already won at Wellington this season and the Red and Blacks second string will hope for a repeat.

This game was moulded by a 99 run opening stand from Trevor Brooks who carried his bat for 60no and Mark Salter who made 52 after Wellington had elected to bat on winning the toss.

Uphill fought back from this start to take some middle order wickets as M.Patch (3-50) did well with the ball, but Wellington regained the initiative as Kevin Crout and Ryan Adams, each with 18, counter attacked well with Brooks to get Wellington to 178-5 at tea.

Frost with 26 did well for Uphill, who are all but relegated, as he was part of a 40 run opening stand, but this was as good as it got for the side from Weston Super Mare as they were dismissed for the addition of just 53 more runs.

Jake Nichol let just eighteen runs go in seven overs with the new ball before giving way to Neil Hendy and Ryan Adams who started the process of wrapping up the Uphill innings as they took 2-14 and 5-20 in nine quality overs each.

Ben Evett joined the attack to take two wickets and Lee Nichol completed the deal to give Wellington 33 points to Uphill’s nine.

The plan is to make the journey to PSJ, which is near Bath, in a minibus, so players are asked to bear this in mind; all will be confirmed in the week ahead…
