Club Day 2016 – Formal Report
Wellington Cricket Club’s Club Day for 2016 – the day in the playing season that is set aside for getting together and celebrating all that is good about the Club – was held on Sunday 10th July and despite some indifferent weather at times it was another successful and enjoyable event.
The day began with the Club’s Under 15s side, which, this season, is a combined effort with Bagborough CC, taking on Taunton Deane CC’s Under 15s side and the visitors shaded a low scoring game with the home team taking a late flurry of wickets.
Once this match was over those who were taking lunch and were to be involved with the afternoon’s proceedings began to arrive and did so in good numbers.
Club Chairman Duncan Short welcomed all those present by ringing the ‘Buttle Bell’ – a solid silver bell that had been given to the Club by Ralph Buttle who was one of the group who re-founded the Club after WW2 and was a former Life Member of the Club – and noted the guests who were in attendance; Cllr Bob Bowrah is the Mayor of Wellington and was accompanied by his wife Liz as they represented the Town Council and the new Chairman of the Wellington and District Sports Federation, Steve Coles, was present too.
The generosity and support that both these Organisations give to the Club was spoken of; Wellington Town Council has made a grant in respect of the Club’s Winter Coaching Programme for Youth Players in each year that it has run (since 2010) and the Federation has provided a platform that the Club has been able to grow from, such as the coordination of obtaining the funds that provided the Club’s Clubroom and Social Area in 2013.
Continuing these fruitful relationships was very much part of the Club’s plans for the future it was noted.
The Club is supporting the Target Ovarian Cancer charity in 2016 and a recent Ladies Day had made for a sizeable donation to be made this worthwhile cause.
Once the Chairman’s Address for the day was complete a splendid two course salad lunch was enjoyed by over seventy people; again this was the creation of the Rudd brothers, Chris and Simon, as they once more pushed the bounds of quality and quantity for those who enjoyed the meal on offer.
Assisting in getting the meal prepared and ready for consumption and making sure there was a drink to go with it were Amanda Moysey, Sharon Frost, Carla Bettinson, Ashley Colman and Sandra Wood and their efforts were crucial.
Provision of tables and chairs over and above the Club’s own stock of such items came from Wellington RFC and thanks go to Caroline and Nigel Davy for providing such and to Graham Sparks who lent some of the seating items from his business to the Club for the day.
The afternoon and early evening saw a T20 game played between two mixed teams drawn from all sections of the Club.
The next Club event is the Past Players Association’s Evening Barbecue that takes place on Saturday 23rd July from 6.30pm on the Clubhouse Patio.
