Wellington 194 Taunton 180

Wellington pulled off a fine West of England Premier League Somerset Division win over Taunton at home on Bank Holiday Saturday as a game of real ebb and flow took place at Courtland Road that concluded with a fourteen run win for the Red and Blacks and a sixth placed finish for the 2021 season.

Arron Campbell opted to take first knock on a dry and hard track and saw it was himself and Nathan Roberts who added 48 quickfire runs and Wellington were well set, but were pegged back when the skipper was trapped LBW for 24.

Roberts was bowled by Cooper (5-46) for the same score as his Captain and at 71-5 the run rate was good, but wickets had been lost.

Cue Oli Beale and Callum Hendy to repair matters with fine knocks of 18 and 17 respectively to get the side to 112-5 and both were set as the left hand/right hand combination dented Taunton’s surge with the ball.

However both were out to off spinner Toohey (3-31) within three runs of each other and it was left to the last four in Wellington’s order to get as far as they could with lots of overs left.

Rob Moysey combined well with both Ryan Aingworth to get to 133-8 and then with Will Derrick to get to 151-9, but it was the last wicket stand of 43 between Moysey and Macaulay Campbell that got Wellington to their eventual total of 194 all out as Moysey made a solid 28 and Campbell a great 25 not out as Taunton were stretched to end the last pair’s efforts.

Taunton started their innings in an ominous vein with a 98 run opening wicket stand as Woodall with 23 and W.Abell with 84 in 73 balls played very and had surely set the platform for victory; Ryan Aingworth with a low caught and bowled chance saw off Woodall and Wellington had a way in maybe.

Another 31 runs were added for the second wicket when at 129-2 Abell was stumped by Ben Evett from Rob Moysey and the danger man was out and from then it was Moysey with 4-27 in 9 overs and Oli Beale with a debut five wicket 1st XI haul in taking 5-26 in 8.4 overs as Taunton were spun out losing eight wickets for 51.

Ben Evett was in supreme wicket keeping form with four catches and one stumping and with both Callum Hendy and Macaulay Campbell taking excellent boundary catches Wellington had triumphed by fourteen runs with eight balls going unused.

A great holiday weekend atmosphere was evident with good numbers of home and away supporters taking in the whole game and both teams enjoying the same post match.

Thanks to all who delivered a great match both on and off the field of play.
