Broadway and Horton 2nd XI 75 Wellington 2nd XI 79-4
Wellington 2nd XI will feel that they have very nearly completed the job in terms of achieving promotion out of Division Six South of the Somerset League after they raced to victory at home to Broadway and Horton 2nd XI last weekend as Alex Troake’s team put the pedal to the metal to get the game done and dusted with before rain could intervene in their quest for victory and this proved to be a good call for the weather did do as expected, but not until after they had achieved 34 points and with it hold a sizeable points average lead with one to play.
It was the home side that won the toss and with it the visitors were asked to bat first and it was seam all the way as wickets were taken at regular intervals by all who formed Wellington’s attack as only Fortune with 25 really got going for Broadway and he had misfortune when Paul Short ran him out with a direct hit after Cook with 14 and T.Ford with 12 had started well enough with a 25 run opening stand, but Macaulay Campbell, bowling with good pace in taking 2-12 in 8 overs, removed both openers and the door was open; Ian Hewson with 1-23 in 8 overs took the new ball with Campbell and they did not let anything go.
They gave way to Lee Nichol who returned 3-11 in 5 overs and Andy Hurry who chipped in with 1-21 in 4.3 overs as the Broadway effort was done with in just 25.3 overs for 75.
With rain advancing the Wellington innings was going to be a full throttle affair and Wellington lost wickets early, but it was a blast from the past that provided the energy to get the job done as Ben Trott, playing his first league game for Wellington in nearly a quarter of a century having been a professional with Somerset and Kent CCCs between 1997 and 2005 and settling in Kent when his professional playing days were completed, slammed 30 in 22 balls with seven fours to offset T.Pedlar’s 3-32 to leave the stage set for Jacob Hurry and Andy Hurry to make 12 not out each and see their side very nearly to their intended target of Division Five cricket in 2022.
